Profile

Maryland Financial Consulting, Inc. (MFC) is a local Baltimore-area firm that occupies a unique niche in the accounting, finance, and tax world.

Dedicated to helping individuals and small businesses who need sound financial and tax assistance, MFC acts in an “as-needed” capacity as accountant, controller, tax preparer, and overall financial advisor.  At MFC we get to know every client personally and learn the nuances of every business we handle.  Our experience covers the maritime industry, warehousing, farming, building and utility contracting, manufacturing, food service, private foundations, medical offices, and a wide range of other businesses

MFC has developed relationships with other firms in the areas of financial planning, auditing, insurance, real estate, and law, thus bringing to the table an ability to exceed the scope of service that any single firm can provide. While we are able to handle in-house most financial and tax situations that come our way, if a client needs special expertise in an area outside our purview, we have the contacts with trusted and reputable experts who can assist us in delivering to our clients the best and most complete financial solutions.

President / CEO:
Matt Hempey, RTRP, AFSP

Matt has over 40 years experience in accounting, finance, and taxation.  After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and finance from Towson University, he worked for two Baltimore-area CPA firms, managing audits, financial statement preparation, and a tax department before starting his own business.  Three decades later, Matt is proud to note that many of his original clients are still with him.  He has earned IRS’s RTRP and AFSP designations; has testified as an expert witness on matters of accounting, financial analysis, and taxation; and spent several years as the Chief Financial Officer of a major stevedoring and warehousing company, with operations in the Port of Baltimore and Sandusky, Ohio.

When not in one of his offices or visiting a client, Matt can usually be found in his woodworking shop, though he has also taken time out to form and manage several real estate partnerships, earn a 4th degree black belt in Hap Ki Do, and run a martial arts school for disadvantaged youth.

Michael E. Ward, CPA, CVA: Mike got his start with Peat Marwick Mitchell — what was (then) one of the “Big Eight” accounting firms — and moved on to Baker Watts before starting his own accounting firm in Towson, MD. His areas of expertise cover all aspects of public accounting, with special emphasis on auditing, financial presentation, business analysis and valuation, and taxation. It was at Mike’s firm that MFC’s President/CEO, Matt Hempey, got his start in accounting many years ago, so it is with great pleasure that MFC now welcomes Mike aboard as an independent consultant and tax preparer.

Dennis Colson, RTRP, AFSP – Retired: After four decades, University of Baltimore accounting graduate, Dennis Colson, recently retired from tax work. Dennis worked with us in the transitioning of over 400 new clients to our firm, during the largest tax law change since the 1980s. He continues to do some independent business accounting and consults with us on shared clients.
